For severe cases, the dog may need to be put under general anesthesia for the grooming. Of course, this is done at the vet's office. This is often done in cases of overly fractious dogs or when there may be pain or the need for the dog to remain immobile for extended periods of time.

Dogs with long, thick fur may need to be groomed every 4-6 weeks, while dogs with short or fine hair may only need to go every 8-12 weeks. It's important to keep up with your dog's grooming program as if left too long, their hair may become matted and cause irritation or infection and need to be shaven.

That's where grooming restraints come into play. The grooming noose, for instance, is a valuable tool. It is attached to a tall metal bar shaped like an upside-down "L" and works by restraining the dog around its neck, ensuring it remains still on the grooming table.

Short, smooth or wiry coat, brush them once a week with a rubber-bristled brush to distribute skin oils through the fur. Long, silky or curly coat, brush them once a day with a rubber-bristled brush or wire slicker brush followed by a steel comb, if needed, to prevent tangles and mats and remove debris.
